授業概要 The purpose of this course is to help political science and economics majors build essential skills for understanding and conducting empirical research. Topics to be covered include: basic research and data collection practices, how to analyze data, how to test research questions, bivariate and multivariate regression models. The course combines lectures by the instructor and in-class data analysis using a statistical software. Basic knowledge of statistics will be helpful, but not required.

授業の到達目標 By the end of the semester, students will be able to understand, interpret, and write empirical papers in the areas of political science and economics. In addition, students will understand the importance of using proper research designs. Students will also become familiar with basic data analysis techniques.

試験: 30% Mid-term exam
レポート: 40% Final paper/presentation: The ultimate goal of this course is to write an original empirical research paper. Students should identify a clear and feasible research question early in the semester, find appropriate dataset(s), and test their hypotheses using techniques covered in class. Students are also asked to present their findings in class at the end of the semester, and to submit a paper that summarizes the findings.
平常点評価: 10% Class Participation.
その他: 20% Problem sets and in-class exercise. Late submissions will not be accepted. Exceptions will be made only for documented illnesses/emergencies.
