授業概要 This course introduces students to the basics of academic writing required to write well-structured essays. At the beginning of the course students will enhance their skills to write well-structured paragraphs that they have built in Communicative Writing I & II. They will then be introduced to how to write multiple-paragraph essays in two different types of rhetorical organizations (process and cause/effect essays). Students will also learn rules of using outside sources in academic writing such as how to prepare reference lists and use direct quotations as well as how to paraphrase and summarize texts.

Throughout the course students will practice writing essays by using the Criterion® Online Writing Evaluation Service offered by Educational Testing Service, where instant feedback on essays based on automated scoring is available. As the final project of the course each student will write an essay of 1000-1500 words in length.
授業の到達目標 1. To become able to write well-structured paragraphs
