授業概要

【CJSP/TAISI Course】

This course offers an introduction to the field of social businesses, which aims not to maximize profits as traditional businesses do, but to solve, or mitigate, social problems through new business models in international contexts. Social businesses with their dual mission—social and economic goals—requires finding innovative ways of tackling social problems. In collaboration with various partners, international donors also have been promoting business activities as a tool for supporting development under international initiatives such as the Sustainable Development Goals. Looking at various approaches, which challenge social problems in our globalising world, this course considers the possibilities and limitations of business activities to realise a sustainable society.

授業の到達目標 Through this course, the students will be able to:
- acquire a basic knowledge of social business and its challenges in international contexts;
- understand the nature and causes of social problems;
- analyse the potentials and limitations of business activities to address various social issues; and
- improve oral and written communication skills through discussions and writing essays.
事前・事後学習の内容 It is essential that students do the required preparatory reading for in-class discussions. Students are expected to carefully read and study the materials at home. It is strongly recommended that students take notes when they read them. Note-taking is not simply a means to record information, but it is also an important part of your learning. It is also useful for students to pay attention to media presentations of social problems and topics related to social businesses.
