Social businesses pursue a dual mission of social and economic goals. There is a growing expectation for social businesses to realise sustainable development. In Japan, the idea of social businesses historically existed in the society. However, particularly in the last decades, the concept of social businesses has been popular and is becoming a trend among those who have dreams/passions for changing the society. This introductory course provides the background and overviews trends of social businesses with a special focus on Japan.

授業の到達目標 Through this course, the students will be able to:
- acquire a basic knowledge of social businesses and its challenges;
- understand the nature and causes of emerging social businesses in Japan;
- analyse the potential and limitations of business activities to address various social issues; and
- improve oral and written communication skills through discussions and writing essays.
事前・事後学習の内容 It is essential that students do the required preparatory reading for in-class discussions. Students are expected to carefully read and study the materials at home.
