授業概要 This course introduces essentialresearch skills that are necessary to write research papers for the LL.M.course. It also offers some opportunities to try out and improve the skills ofresearch. The course covers legal research techniques both in a law library andresearching online.
授業の到達目標 Students will acquire necessary skills to write their own research papers, in accordance with established academic style of writing.
授業計画 1: Introduction (Rademacher & Nakamura)
  Skills that are necessary for academic writing: finding primary and secondary legal sources; effective writing

2: Waseda Libraries (especially Takada Library, and Center for Legal Resources) (Librarian)
 Using WINE online catalogue; tour of the libraries

3: Online Legal Database Practice (1) using Lexis (Lexis, Rademacher)
  Lexis outline and major search techniques
  Practical session (US legal information etc.)

4: Online Legal Database Practice (2) using Westlaw (Westlaw, Nakamura)
  Westlaw outline and major search techniques
  Practical session (US, UK and other common law countries’ legal information etc.)

5: Japanese Legal Resources (1) (Nakamura)
  History of Japanese Law

6: Japanese Legal Resources (2) (Nakamura)
 Legislation; Cases; law books and journals

7: German and European Legal Resources (Rademacher)
  Federal system; legislation; cases; academic commentaries etc.
 EU legal resources and other international legal resources

8: Writing Skills (1) Learning from a good academic paper (Rademacher)
   Analysis of the paper structure; ways of effective arguments; supporting evidence; effective paragraph writings etc.

9: Writing Skills (2) Learning from good research papers (Rademacher)
   Effective presentation of a research question; effective paper structure
10: Academic Writing Ethics (Rademacher)
What is academic writing? What is plagiarism?
Footnotes: proper citations and references; Bibliography

11-15: Choosing and refining your research question (Nakamura & Rademacher)
tutorial sessions for groups 1 to 5 (presentation and discussion of students’ research question) [students are divided into five groups, ca. 6 students each; each student prepare draft research question in a A4 paper, and make a presentation; discussion on the research question follows.]
