授業概要  Medium of instruction is one of the most influential means of maintaining language and culture. Generally medium of instruction policy decides which social and linguistic groups would have the access of economic and political power. In most of the post colonial countries, colonial language empowers and privileges small elite and creates inequalities in the society. Even in the English-dominant countries, the history of medium of instruction is also the same. In English dominant countries, sometimes indigenous languages treated as uncivilized and made it impossible for the indigenous people to speak in their own language as medium of instruction policy is a part of educational policy. The Maori in New Zealand and Indigenous Indians―all have gone through the same experience. This course will focus on the problems of using indigenous languages as a medium of instruction for the linguistic minorities.
授業の到達目標  This course will introduce major aims of the language-rights movement and language rights of the linguistic minorities in the English-dominant countries. It will also help students to understand the problems of indigenous people to use their language,
