副題 Second Language Acquisition
授業概要
This course will provide students theoretical and pedagogical backgrounds on how English as a second or foreign language is acquired. We will overview child and adult second language acquisition in general, focusing on 1) learner language, 2) linguistic, psychological, and social aspects, and 3) individual differences. Since this course is offered as one of the elective courses on Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), our discussion will also include instructed second language learning. Students will be expected to choose their own area of interest, and do comprehensive review of literature with their preparation for an MA thesis or Ph.D. qualifying paper/dissertation in mind.

授業の到達目標 1. To understand current theories and issues in second language acquisition in general;
2. To overview recent studies on the acquisition of English as a foreign language (EFL) within the larger context of SLA research (e.g., age, crosslinguistic influences, the linguistic environment, cognition, learner language, aptitude, motivation, affect, individual differences, and social dimensions);
3. To become an ‘expert’ in one area of interest in second language acquisition;
4. To practice a few annotated bibliographies and write a research proposal.
