The purpose of this class is to provide participants of NTU=Waseda Double MBA program with fundamental knowledge on management issues of Japanese firms. The class will be conducted in various manners such as (1) in-class discussions, (2) field works, i.e. visiting Japanese companies, (3) invitation of guest speakers, and (4) instructions of project paper writing and presentations.

At NTU three credits are given for 36 hours of lectures and discussions. To be equivalent, at Waseda two credits are to be given for 24 hours (= 1.5 hours x 16 times) for the NTU=Waseda double MBA program. However, at Waseda (or any other typical universities in Japan) two credits are given for 22.5 hours (= 1.5 x 15 times). This special class has been designed to fill the gap of 1.5 hour between the two educational systems. In other words, this course is regarded as the “16th class of all classes taken at Waseda Business School.”

Due to the aforementioned reason,

-          It is mandatory for all double MBA program students to take this class;

-          Participation is limited to the members of the double MBA program;

-          No specific credit is given for this particular course (in other words, included in other classes); and,

-          Rating is “P (pass)” or “Q (fail).”

However, because of the very same reason, nature of this class can cover wide range of topics and can be managed in a highly flexible manner. For example, we visited several companies and invited guest speakers in the past classes. In-class discussions will not be limited to management issues in a narrow sense but will include (a) topics of participants’ project papers, (b) Japanese cultures necessary to understand behaviors of Japanese firms, and (c) self-understanding required to conduct businesses in a global context.

Please note that company visits will be conducted when schedule of participants and companies meets, and the first class will start from 18:15 (after the “Otaki zemi”) on Tuesday.

授業の到達目標 The objectives of this class is to function as the recap of any courses provided at Waseda Business School, and to give overall picture of management, especially in Japanese management.
